Adenosine Tri Phosphate ATP

Concept Explanation

Adenosine Tri Phosphate ATP

Inside the mitochondria, when an inorganic phosphate group (PO_4^3-, represented as Pi) gets attached to a compound called ADP (adenosine diphosphate), a molecule of ATP is formed:

ADP + Pi + energy rightarrow ATP

ATP:

The word ATP stands for  Adenosine Triphosphate, also known as the energy currency of the cell. The energy released during the process of respiration is used to build-up an ATP molecule from ADP and inorganic phosphate (Pi). This can be summarised as the equation given below:

      ADP+Pioverset{Energy}{rightarrow}ADPsim Pi=ATP
